MANY VIEWS - ONE EUROPE: How individual biographies become a common narrative
On 12 June 2025, Dr. Sergey Lagodinsky, Member of the European Parliament, will give the Heidelberg University Lecture in the auditorium of the Old University of Heidelberg. The title of his speech is "MANY VIEWS - ONE EUROPE: How individual biographies become a common narrative". In this speech, Dr. Lagodinsky will shed light on how individual life stories can contribute to a collective European narrative.
Dr. Sergey Lagodinsky has been a Member of the European Parliament since July 2019, since 2024 he has been, among other things, Chairman of the European Parliament's delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly (the Eastern Neighbourhood), a member of the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Committee on Foreign Affairs and a deputy member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. He is Vice-Chairman of the Greens/EFA Group and spokesman on legal affairs, Russia and transatlantic relations.
Born in Astrakhan in Russia, Lagodinsky moved to Germany with his family in 1993, where he studied law in Göttingen after graduating from high school in 1996. After further stages in the USA, including at Harvard University, he wrote his doctorate on the subject of "Freedom of opinion and protection against anti-Semitic statements". Prior to this, in 2011, he not only resigned as spokesperson for the Federal Working Group of Jewish Social Democrats, which he himself founded, but also left the SPD.
From 2008, he was a member of the Board of Representatives and the Presidium (2008-2012) of the Jewish Community of Berlin and was Chairman of the Integration Committee (2008-2012) and then of the Culture Committee. As the leader of the opposition, he fought for years against corruption, lack of transparency and for more democracy and diversity in Germany's largest Jewish community.
For the 2024 European elections, the federal delegates' conference of Alliance 90/The Greens voted him second on the federal candidate list.
