Tu Bi-Schwat
On Tu bi-shvat we celebrate the New Year of the trees. (Shevat is a month in the Hebrew calendar that falls in January or February of the Gregorian calendar. "Tu" is made up of the letters Tet (9) and Waw (6), meaning 15, so "Tu bi-Svat" simply means the 15th of Shvat - when the trees begin to blossom in Israel and the rest of the Mediterranean region.
But what is eaten or drunk and why - more about that in the evening ..
