"Matchmaking"

The idea is not new, but the implementation in Heidelberg is: together with Medienforum Heidelberg e. V., the university will now be showing films on the subject of Judaism at regular intervals. We are also inviting speakers who will be available to talk to the audience after the screening.

We will start on November 2 with the film Matchmaking, which - fittingly for a Sunday morning - provides light-hearted entertainment. The film interweaves the world of orthodox Judaism with universal themes such as identity, self-discovery and the longing for true love. Director Erez Tadmor manages to combine humorous dialog, emotional depth and cultural contrasts - between Ashkenazim and Sephardim, between tradition and modernity - in a light-footed way. Matchmaking is an Israeli Romeo and Juliet story with humor, a pinch of social satire and warm-hearted characters who are looking for their way between a sense of religious duty and romantic freedom.

Matchmaking opens the film series with a charming look at love, faith and the clash of worlds.

The speaker will be Prof. Klaus Davidowicz, Judaist at the University of Vienna. Davidowicz himself heads the Jewish Film Club in Vienna; his research focuses on Jewish cultural history in modern times, Kabbalah and Jewish film.

The film will be shown in the original language (Hebrew) with English subtitles.
