It also works in the Allgäu.
Dr. Susanne Klingenstein, Associate in Yiddish Studies at Harvard University, will speak about the beginnings of Yiddish book printing in the early modern period. Under the title "Es geht auch im Allgäu. The beginnings of Yiddish book printing, 1534-1546", the lecture will address the question of how Yiddish texts first came into print in the 16th century and what regional, cultural and media conditions made this development possible.
The focus is therefore on a chapter of Jewish cultural and book history that has received little attention to date. The lecture sheds light on early printing locations, transmission routes and the emergence of Yiddish printing culture in a historical context that goes beyond the well-known centers of Hebrew and Yiddish book printing.
Dr. Susanne Klingenstein is a literary historian and researches Yiddish literary and cultural history. Her academic focus is on the history of Jewish texts, their medial communication and their cultural significance in the early modern period.
