Majority and Minority in the Post-Ottoman Space
This panel discussion invites scholars, students, and all interested participants to join an engaging conversation on how relations between majorities and minorities have been shaped, challenged, and redefined across the post-Ottoman world. Bringing together researchers working on a variety of regions and themes, the panel forms part of a two-day international workshop with participants from Turkey, the Balkans, and Israel.
The discussion will explore cases ranging from Jewish–Arab relations in Israel and Kurdish–Turkish relations in Turkey to Greek–Turkish encounters in Greece, ethnic divisions in Cyprus, and interethnic tensions in the Eastern Balkans. Moving beyond isolated case studies, the panel asks how shared historical experiences and ideological legacies of the late Ottoman Empire continue to influence today’s patterns of coexistence and exclusion, and how they shape the ongoing transformation of social and political life in the region.
By placing these diverse perspectives in dialogue, the round-table invites reflection on continuities and ruptures in majority–minority relations, and on how imperial inheritances, nation-state formation, and changing geopolitical frameworks continue to shape interethnic dynamics across the post-Ottoman space.
