About the program

Since July 2025, the Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies (HfJS) and the Heidelberg University of Education have been jointly responsible for the research project "Media literacy in the context of the Middle East conflict - countering left-wing extremism among pupils and students", which is funded for three years by the BMFSFJ's "Live Democracy" program.
The aim of the project is to analyze and reflect on the use of social media in the context of the Middle East conflict among pupils in higher grades and students - and thus contribute to the prevention of extremism in educational institutions. The aim is to identify and elaborate on (left-wing) extreme narratives and conspiracy myths regarding the Middle East conflict.
Building on this, workshops and argumentation training will be developed and carried out for pupils and (teacher) students. In a further step, workshops will also be offered for teachers, educational professionals and multipliers to enable them to implement argumentation training for young people and young adults themselves in the sense of extremism and anti-Semitism prevention and democracy education.

The project aims to reach various target groups, mainly secondary school pupils, students (of teacher training courses), teachers, educational professionals (school social work), university lecturers, university management and other multipliers.
With the planned kick-off event on 17.11.2025, we would like to provide you with further information on the project on the one hand, and on the other hand to shed light on the topic from a multi-perspective and intersectional perspective with experts from various professional/action fields.
