Faces of left-wing anti-Semitism

History of the Jewish people Lecture Open

The Heidelberg University of Jewish Studies is participating in the art and education project "Invisible in the middle of society? Showing your face against anti-Semitism!", which will take place from November 20, 2025 to January 27, 2026 in cooperation with the Schwetzingen Adult Education Center and is generously funded by the Baden-Württemberg State Government Commissioner against Anti-Semitism and for Jewish Life.

In addition to the exhibition in the vhs-Galerie Schwetzingen, various lectures with academics from the HfJS Heidelberg and a film screening followed by a discussion are planned. The topics range from left-wing and socio-political forms of anti-Semitism to historical and current hostility towards Jews.

Lecture as part of the exhibition "Invisible - in the middle of society? Show your face against anti-Semitism!"

Faces of left-wing anti-Semitism

Anti-Semitism, also a left-wing phenomenon. In what way? This lecture will begin by highlighting the history of left-wing anti-Semitism (keyword "anti-imperialism"), before moving on to the present and looking at its current forms. The recent past shows how clearly hatred of Jews is articulated both in the digital space on social media and on German streets. Since 7 October 2023, the Hamas massacre of Israeli civilians, there has been a strong polarization in the public (opinion) space, including violent attacks.
The role of left-wing anti-Semitism in this context will be examined in more detail in the second part of the lecture. The focus will be on left-wing/left-wing extremist groups such as queer or feminist circles, but also in particular on the narrative and personal links to other extremist milieus, such as Islamism (keyword "post-colonialism") and right-wing extremism.
