Database Project "Biblical-Hebrew Personal Names"

The aim of this project was to create a database of Biblical-Hebrew personal names. The database, which is accessible online, makes it possible to carry out elaborate morphological and syntactic-semantic searches on the entire corpus of names.

In contrast to (name) books and lexicons, a database can present the material according to various aspects and can be continuously expanded. In addition to lexical-syntactic and semantic name analyses, an overview and evaluation of the interpretations of a specific name as well as bibliographical entries are fed into the database.

The name analysis is based on two guiding principles: 1. The analysis should not only explain individual onomastic phenomena, but also keep an eye on the grammatical phenomena and typological features of the entire Hebrew onomastic corpus. 2. The phenomena of the Hebrew onomasticon should be seen against the background of other West Semitic onomastic corpora and placed in relation to the latter. Following these two principles will not allow any "ad hoc" interpretations and will ensure that the biblical-Hebrew personal names are anchored in Semitic naming in terms of language history and the history of tradition. Epigraphically documented names from the first century BC will also be included in the database.

Development

The DAHPN has been available to the public since December 2020. It was created as part of the database project 'Old Hebrew Personal Names', which has been funded by the DFG since 2014 and is based at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg and the ITG of the Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität München. The editors of the database are Hans Rechenmacher (Würzburg), Viktor Golinets (Heidelberg) and Annemarie Frank (Munich). The technical implementation is supervised by Christian Riepl (Munich).

in 2021, the DAHPN module was spun off from the Biblia Hebraica transcripta and is now independent.
