Bible Glossaries as Hidden Cultural Carriers: Judeo-French Cultural Exchange in the High Middle Ages (Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities)

The academy's project Bible Glossaries as Hidden Cultural Carriers: Judeo-French Cultural Exchange in the High Middle Ages started in January 2023. Its principal investigators are Prof. Dr. Hanna Liss (Jewish Studies) and Dr. Stephen Dörr (Romance Studies).

The 18-year project will contribute to the investigation of Judeo-French linguistic and literary traditions, which are being examined in their cultural, linguistic and theological significance. The aim of the project is to edit and contextualize Hebrew-French bible glossaries and French glossaries in Hebrew script that deal with the Hebrew commentary literature on the Bible and the Talmud (tosafot). The project's work in continuously integrated into a digital work environment in order to make the researchers' findings usable beyond the project.
