The Hochschule für Jüdische Studien (HfJS) in Heidelberg is sponsored by the Central Consistory of the Jews in Germany (Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland) and shares responsibility for the fruitful development of the Jewish community in Germany and the general society of Europe, as well as furthering the comprehensive study of Jewish religion, history and culture.
There are many reasons for studying at the HfJS.
Through the introduction of a career oriented course of study the HfJS offers an academically established education that will also be useful in preparing the graduate for professional life. This focus on practical training, made possible by an array of partnerships with a variety of universities and institutes (The Universities of Heidelberg, Graz, the Fachhochschule, as well as the Pädagogischen Hochschule Heidelberg, amongst others), offers to the student of the HfJS a rich educational experience that shall serve as ample preparation for a variety of careers.
Because Jewish culture extends over all areas of life, the HfJS offers 8 professorships in a wide range of different academic areas. As such, it represents the central place for Jewish studies in Europe. The HfJS seeks to foster an interest in the many-sided character of Jewish life amongst its students and to prepare them for careers within Germany and the broader European community. Graduates shall be able to competently and creatively perform their professional duties in fields as diverse as religious education, youth work, in occupations requiring interreligious and intercultural interaction, community administration; but also in such areas as academic research, Museum and archival work, as well as in the library sciences and media. The HfJS seeks to train well-grounded, open and cosmopolitan students. Our maxim is:
Make thy Torah a fixed duty, Say little and do much; receive every man with a cheerful expression of face.
