CURRICULUM VITAE

I was born in 1957 in a small city, Falun, in the north of Sweden. In 1976, I began my studies in Upsala and have been an active participant ever since in the life of various Jewish communities. After completing my M.A., I worked as a teacher in a variety of different Yeshivot in the U.S. and Israel. I obtained my rabbinic ordination in 1999 from the Bet Midrash Sefaradi in Jerusalem. Since this time, I have also received a number of other qualifications: training in Chazanut, Shechita for chickens, mohel (in which I am lacking only 2 weeks of practical training for a full certification).

I was active in the Jewish community in Stockholm between the years 1984 – 1986 and 1992 – 1995, mainly in educational and youth-oriented areas (youth education programs, summer camp, Bar Mitzva preparation, conversation groups, etc.). I taught a beginner’s course in the Yeshiva Nachalat Zwi between 1995 – 1999, taking the position of assistant rabbi in Munich after the completion of my work in the Yeshiva. My tasks there were various, but I interacted especially with singles and recently married couples. I held lessons for youths and beginners on the Siddur and Jewish customs, as well as lead a Shabbat morning prayer-group for beginners. As my position developed I had the opportunity to hold sermons on Shabbat morning, prepare youths for their Bar Mitzva, visit retirement homes and schools, perform the duties of a hazan, officiate in the burial of members of the community, give courses to Russian-speaking members of the community, as well as regulate the practices associated with Jewish dietary law (Kashrut).

From 2003 to 2008 I was active as rabbi and representative of the Israeli organisation Shavei Israel (www.shavei.orgIcon External Link) in the Jewish community in Palma de Mallorca. An important part of my task there was to establish a relationship with those members of the community whose familial roots were in Judaism, but who lacked any current involvement or connection to the life of the community (www.memoriajueva.comIcon External Link).

Since April, 2008 I have taken over the position of rabbi at HfJS.

My wife Natasha was born in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, and together we have five children. Natasha has a B.A. in International Economics and is trained to be Medical Radiology Assistant, which is her present profession. She speaks Russian, German, Hebrew, Spanish and English. In Munich she worked in a variety of volunteer programs for Russian-speaking members of the community and small children. She also worked as mashgicha in the Jewish retirement home and balanit in the Munich mikva.

Hobbys and Interests

Being rather lazy, my 4 children – wonders, all of them – leave very little energy for anything too active. That said, I always enjoy reading a good book. (You don’t know what you’re missing, not being able to read Swedish literature!)

Tasks and Goals of My Work

  • Introduction to Jewish learning and Hazanut (State Examinations, B.A. Jewish Studies, M.A. Rabbinics)
  • Rabbi and spiritual guide for students of the HfJS
  • Organisation of shiurim and traditional instruction in Jewish thought, customs and traditions, textual study, etc.
  • Together with my family, offering an open house for Shabbat evening and more besides
