The Albert Einstein Library

Library

The library contains one of the biggest collections of Judaica material in Germany and includes works from all disciplines within Jewish Studies from 16 th to the 21 st  centuries.  The library serves not only the needs of students and academic staff of the HfJS and the University of Heidelberg but is also open to interested members of the public as a reference library.

In the newly-opened Hochschule (2009) the library extends from the Old Building into the northern wing of the New Building, creating a bridge between the two buildings.  Including the reading gallery and the basement, the library covers an area of c.540 m² and contains 2000 metres of open access shelving as well as 400 metres of storage space, which is partially arranged in a modern rolling stack system.

In collaboration with the Library Service Centre for Baden-Württemberg (Bibliotheksservice-Zentrum Baden-Württemberg BSZ), the integrated library system Koha has been implemented as part of a pilot project which makes it possible to process and display non-latin catalogue entries from the comfort of a web-based OPAC system.  A self-issue machine is also available to library users.  A RFID-based security system as well as photocopiers with a scanning function are also installed.  Four OPAC computers, 2 study areas with computers and 28 further study areas with internet access are also available to users.  Additional computers are available outside the library in the lower foyer area.

The building and equiping of the library was supported by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
